chandigarh: these serials show us the true nature of women making fools of men in the house and teaming up against each other to fulfil their vested interests. once they get what they want it's goodbye to loyalty and hello backstabbing. alarming? well, degrading for women too, and when you hear it coming from a ba-1 student studying in a prominent college for men in the city, it's right down scary. but wait, when it comes to a lot of socalled 'family' motherin-law, daughter-in-law serials such as kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi and kahani ghar ghar ki being beamed at prime time the messages that are flickering across to homes all over the city are not quite right. b k gupta, head of the department of political science, dav college, sector-10, is averse to the idea of watching these. the extent to which the cruelty of the mother-in-law is shown in these serials raises my hackles. this could influence young girls who'll associate every small coincidence in their married life with the incidents in the serials. his idea of entertainment is to watch good light-hearted comedy serials and religious ones. swatantra kapoor, secretary, sahayta cancer sahyog vehemently opposes the depiction of cancer in some of the serials such as ghar ek mandir and kyunki saas bhi... these are reinforcing the ill informed and stereotyped mindset of the people about cancer being a fatal disease, which is totally wrong. there is life after cancer provided it is detected in the early stages. because of the different characters in the serials the girls develop a set attitude against relationships, which can otherwise be very beautiful. what these serials are depicting is more of deceit than other moral values, says jitender of gcg, sector 11. she also feels that these encourage livein relationships. when young women watch these serials they like what they see, not realising that tomorrow, god forbid, if it happens to them, they will collapse. adds another young ba 1 student, mohinder, after seeing these soap operas one can only feel scared of women.
